ENCINITAS, CA — Encinitas residents can safely dispose of unwanted or expired prescription medications Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Office will collect medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at eight locations throughout the county, including Scripps Hospital at 354 Santa Fe Drive in Encinitas.
The free, anonymous event is part of a nationwide effort organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to prevent prescription drug misuse and accidental poisonings by keeping unwanted medications out of the wrong hands.
Needles and other sharps will not be accepted.
Residents who cannot participate Saturday can drop off unwanted medications at sheriff's stations and substations during regular business hours, including the North Coastal Sheriff's Station at 175 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas.
