Amtrak Train Strikes, Kills Pedestrian in Encinitas

Police say the unidentified woman ran toward the tracks.

ENCINITAS -- Authorities are seeking the public's help in a case where an unidentified woman seemed to intentionally run toward a set of train tracks before being struck by a northbound Amtrak train.

Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit responded to the Amtrak Train vs. pedestrian collision at about 7:40 pm on Oct. 29. The collision occurred on the railroad tracks near 1012 N. Vulcan Avenue, in the city of Encinitas.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept., a northbound Amtrak Train was traveling at about 84 miles per hour when the engineer observed an unidentified female run toward the railroad tracks. The train went into emergency braking, but the train struck the female as she ran onto the tracks.

The female was pronounced dead at the scene.
