Local Director Releases Film to Save Yoga Swami

Cyrus Sutton released the six-minute video on Friday to raise awareness about the yoga yurt, which the city says violates building codes.

A local director has released a short film in an effort to save the yurt at Yoga Swami, according to a press release.

For the past five years, the owner of the space, Dawn Singer, has operated a donation-based yoga studio in the yurt. Now, the city of Encinitas has ordered that Singer—and fellow yurt owner, Tara Teipel of Lemongrass Aveda Concept Salon & Spa—comply with current building codes or remove their yurts.

In a recent outpouring to save the space, yurt supporters held a peace march at City Hall, where Singer and Teipel addressed the and asked that current building codes be amended to include the circular, tent-like structures and other eco-friendly buildings. They also gave the council a petition—signed by more than a thousand people—to let the yurt stand.

"We are choosing to document this local story because there is an opportunity here for citizens and local governments all over the world to open a dialog about alternative structures and their ability to save monetary and planetary resources affording their occupants more time to build stronger communities," Cyrus Sutton said in a statement.
