The hippocampus has a role in consolidating short term memory into long term memory. It’s involved in such complex processes as forming, organizing, and storing memories.

The brain has to be able to pull information instantly without effort, whether it’s a fact on hold like a telephone number or an aging memory that’s been sitting in storage for years. No one likes a disorganized library that loses books or shelves them in wrong places.
