Council to Consider Cardiff Kook-Inspired Race

The run would likely draw about 1,600 participants.

has inspired countless unsanctioned public art projects, as each week seems to bring a new guise for the surfer statue—most recently, in honor of the . And now, the popular statue has inspired a proposed 5K/10K run.

The Encinitas City Council will consider whether the producers of the Cardiff Kook Run can submit a special event permit for the race during its Sept. 14 meeting.

The 5K/10K run walk is currently scheduled to take place on next year’s Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. It would be held on South Coast Highway 101 from Moonlight Beach to Cardiff, near the San Elijo campground.

Tepl, Inc., the Encinitas-based company behind the run, estimates that 1,500 to 1,700 people would participate, and proceeds would be earmarked for local groups such as , Cardiff Soccer, Patrons of Encinitas Parks, and .

and have written letters in support of the event.
