Distracted Driver Hits, Seriously Injures Pedestrian at Encinitas Intersection, Sheriff's Corporal Says

A 22-year-old male driver was admittedly looking at his GPS when he struck a woman at Santa Fe and Balour drives, Cpl. Brenda Sipley said.

ENCINITAS, CA: Distraction and driver fatigue were factors in a crash at an Encinitas intersection that left a 73-year-old pedestrian seriously injured, authorities said Thursday.

A 22-year-old man behind the wheel of a commercial delivery truck told investigators he was looking at a GPS device when he struck the Massachusetts woman in a crosswalk at the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Balour Drive shortly after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's Cpl. Brenda Sipley said. The driver was turning left onto Santa Fe Drive at the time, and the truck's side mirror hit the woman in the head.

The pedestrian was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated for a serious head injury, Sipley said.
