Encinitas Oktoberfest Celebrates 30 Years This Weekend

ENCINITAS, CA — The Encinitas Oktoberfest and Artisan Faire will celebrate its 30th year Sunday with German food and beer, live entertainment, local vendors and family-friendly activities.

The free festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. along Mountain Vista Drive, between Wandering and Rambling roads. The annual event, presented by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, draws more than 15,000 people each year, according to organizers.

The celebration will feature German music and dance performances, along with a ceremonial parade at noon. More than 130 artisans and food vendors will transform Mountain Vista Drive into a lively marketplace, selling crafts, jewelry, handmade goods and food.

Other activities include a German-themed dog costume contest, stein-holding competitions for adults and children, and a kids' zone with inflatable slides, games, an obstacle course and rock-climbing wall.

There will be two beer gardens. Traditional German fare, including sausages, bratwurst and pretzels, will be available at the event, along with German brews, beer from local breweries, wine and other beverages.

"Encinitas Oktoberfest brings the best of Bavaria to the California coast and is the perfect way to kick off the fall season," said Carol Knight, CEO of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and Visit Encinitas.

"For three decades, Encinitas Oktoberfest has brought residents and visitors together to kick off fall with great food, lively entertainment and unmistakable coastal spirit," Knight said. "It's festive, family-friendly and truly one of a kind — just like Encinitas."

The festival reflects the German heritage of Olivenhain, now part of Encinitas, which was founded by German settlers in 1884.

A free shuttle will run from 10 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. between the Flora Vista Elementary School parking lot and the corner of Mountain Vista Drive and Wandering Road. Bike parking will be available at both ends of the festival, including a free bike valet at the Wandering Road entrance.

The event will also include an EDCO-sponsored water refill station and a clothing swap hosted by I Love A Clean San Diego and made possible with support from Cox.
