Flooding Possible This Weekend In Encinitas: Where To Get Sandbags

ENCINITAS, CA — With Hurricane Hilary making its way toward Southern California, flooding is possible this weekend in Encinitas and across San Diego County.

The National Hurricane Center issued a Tropical Storm Watch Friday across the county, marking the first time such a warning has been issued for the region.

Hurricane Hilary, now a Category 4, is expected to weaken to a tropical storm when it reaches San Diego, bringing heavy rains, strong winds and hazardous surf conditions to the county. A tropical storm has not made landfall in California since 1939, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch that will be in effect Saturday through Monday in the San Diego County coastal areas, deserts, mountains and valleys.

"Flash flooding will be possible across the whole region, with rare and dangerous flooding possible across the mountains and deserts," forecasters said.

Encinitas residents can pick up sandbags at local home improvement stores or online retailers. Residents can also get free sandbags from the city's Public Works Department at 160 Calle Magdalena. Sandbags are available 24 hours a day, while supplies last, on the southwest corner of the parking lot at the self-filling sandbag station, according to the city.
