For When You Fall off the Healthy Eating Band Wagon

We’ve all been there.

You had such a great morning – a 30 minute brisk walk followed by a delicious and healthy breakfast. You managed to avoid those donuts at work and you ate your packed lunch. Yahoo for you!

Then 3pm rolls around and all bets are off.

You frantically scour the office for something, anything sweet and you find the jackpot: a jar of Hersey’s kisses. You start with 2… then head back for a few more. Before you know it, your inner voice is saying, “That's it - the jar’s mine” and you eat ‘em all.

It’s easy to think that you’ve totally ruined your day. You feel disappointed and you feel fat.

But all is not lost. One misstep does not totally erase all the good, healthy decisions you’ve made. And one misstep does not give you permission to go crazy for the rest of the day.

When you fall off the wagon, just hop right back on. Easy to say, hard to do, I know.

But, follow these steps when you find yourself slipping into a food black hole. They will help you regain your composure and get you back on track.

1. Admit that you went a little nutso. It’s cool. We all make mistakes. Just take a deep breath and admit that you are standing on the edge of a very scary cliff. You can decide to step back to safety or jump. Tip: choose the first option!

2. Pat yourself on the back! Yes, even though it seems like a moment of weakness, it’s not. Why? Because you recognized that you were about to go buckwild, and you stopped yourself. Go, You!

3. Don’t overcompensate. Don’t go to extremes to make up for your little blunder. There is no need to starve yourself for the rest of the day This will just continue a crazy streak – and you’ll probably end up pigging out. If you feel like you still need to eat, grab a piece of fruit or a handful of fresh veggies and go crazy. Then eat a sensible dinner and start again tomorrow.

4. Move on. It’s over. It happened. Forget about it like that “totally hot” spandex outfit you used to wear in the early 90s and move on. Your next meal is a new opportunity to feed your bod what is really needs. So start there and enjoy it.
