Gail Roberts Exhibit at MiraCosta College's Art Gallery

MiraCosta College is proud to present an art exhibit featuring the recent paintings of artist Gail Roberts. The show opens February 3 and co

The exhibit will feature paintings based on Gail Roberts’ collection of almost 100 birds’ nests of all shapes and sizes, acquired over 20 years. Intended to protect the birds’ offspring, these architectural feats of strength and endurance contain a surprising variety of materials and are simultaneously precious, delicate and decorative. They evoke references to birth and innocence, but when abandoned they have qualities of death and decay. In her paintings, the nests are a metaphor and vehicle for inquiry; commentary; and reflections on nature, culture and our temporal existence.

Gail Roberts received her BFA and MA at the University of New Mexico and is a Professor Emerita at San Diego State University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including Costa Rica, France, Ireland, Wisconsin, and at various museums and galleries throughout Southern California. Her work has been critically reviewed in Art in America, art ltd., the Los Angeles Times, and Modern Painters, and is included in permanent collections at the Oakland Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, San Diego Museum of Art, as well as in numerous corporate and private collections.

A free reception will be held Thursday, February 5, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and talks by the artist will be held the same day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
