'Green Flash Sunset' Captured In Encinitas: Patch Photo Of The Week
What is a green flash at sunset? Patch dives in to show when conditions are right, a sunset can create this coastal end-of-day phenomenon.

ENCINITAS, CA — A San Diego resident photographed the pivotal moment when the sun dipped below the horizon and reflected the "Green Flash" of light.
Randy Venier, a resident of Encinitas, has studied the phenomenon, attempting to capture the rare moment.
He says that the phrase "Green Flash" is a misnomer.

"Many assume the phenomenon is revealed as a brilliant bright flash of green that extends across the horizon.
"In actuality, the 'Green Flash' occurs during specific meteorological (relatively rare) conditions - typically very clear air all the way out to the horizon at sunset. This condition is often present during Santa Ana winds as the particles in the atmosphere are blown out to sea beyond the horizon," he said.

When conditions are right, the sun's light dips below the horizon, and the water's edge will turn green for a brief moment just before the sun disappears.
"The event is probably more accurately described as the 'Green Shift,' although 'Green Flash' sounds more exciting," he said.
Many have seen the green flash without knowing it, expecting a sudden burst of brilliant green color. As for this Patch editor, I've only captured the sight a handful of times.
