Helicopter Crew Helps Search for Suspect in Encinitas

The suspect, sought in connection with a possible stabbing, was located in Cardiff, a sheriff's captain told Patch.

ENCINITAS, CA — A sheriff's helicopter crew helped search for a man Tuesday morning in the Cardiff area of Encinitas in connection with a possible stabbing, a San Diego County Sheriff's captain said.

"At this point it appears to be an assault with a deadly weapon," sheriff's Capt. John Maryon said, in an email to Patch. "It appears it was a dispute between two males and one of them attempted to stab the other."

"The suspect hid from us, which is why ASTREA [the sheriff's helicopter] responded, but we did take the suspect into custody," Maryon said.

According to Maryon, the initial call came from 417 Santa Fe Drive, but deputies located the suspect near 2050 S. Coast Highway 101, by the bridge near restaurant row in Cardiff.

The suspect's name was not immediately available.

Maryon added that the sheriff's department tends to receive many calls when a helicopter is flying, which ties up the non-emergency lines at the sheriff's communications center. A good source of information in emergency situations, he said, is Alert San Diego. He encouraged residents to sign up online at Readysandiego.org.
