ENCINITAS, CA: The appointment of an interim superintendent for San Dieguito Union High School District was announced Thursday.

The district's Board of Trustees appointed Eric Dill to fill the role vacated by outgoing Superintendent Rick Schmitt, who announced in April that he was leaving at the end of the school year to accept a superintendent position for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District in Northern California.

Dill joined the district in 2001, and since 2010, has served as assistant superintendent of business services.

The board's interim appointment of Dill was made during a special meeting held Thursday and is pending formal board approval at the next regularly scheduled public board meeting, June 16.

Dill is expected to assume superintendent duties effective July 1 and remain in the position until the board selects a new permanent superintendent.

Board trustees have chosen a firm, Leadership Associates, to conduct the search and advise them through the process.

Community forums were held Thursday at San Dieguito Academy and Canyon Crest Academy to gather input about the desired characteristics to be used in recruiting and selecting a superintendent.

Parents and community members who missed the meetings can still provide their input via an online survey through Monday, June 13. The survey is also available in Spanish.
