The Jazz of Thelonious Monk Comes to MiraCosta College

The genius of Thelonious Monk is coming to MiraCosta College!

The genius of Thelonious Monk is coming to MiraCosta College when Music Department Chair Steve Torok and the MiraCosta Jazz Collective present, The Eclectic & Brilliant Jazz of Thelonious Monk during a pair of special performances and discussions set for October 21.

More than a concert, the Monk tribute will include brief discussions of the jazz master interspersed between the tunes.

The first session starts at 1 p.m. in Studio A of the Music Building on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive. A more formal concert will be held at 7:30 p.m., also in Studio A. General admission tickets for the evening performance and discussion are $10, students, staff and seniors are $8 each. The 1 p.m. presentation is free.

Monk remains one of the greatest composers and most eclectic figures in jazz history. The bebop innovator wrote such classics as Round Midnight, Blue Monk, and Straight, No Chaser. Monk’s legacy also lives on through the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, established in 1986. The institute teaches jazz to public school students around the globe helping them to develop imaginative thinking, creativity, curiosity and a respect for cultural heritages.
