Occupy North County Protest to Happen in Encinitas Saturday

Occupy Wall Street — against the perceived wrongdoings of US corporations and big banks — has been rippling across the nation since launching in New York City a month ago, and now, it’s coming to Encinitas.

Occupy North County, a newly formed group of several dozen residents, has organized a protest for Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. at the corner of Encinitas Boulevard and Coast Highway 101.

The local group aims to end what it feels is corruption and greed among the wealthiest one percent of the US population, according to a written statement. It is the latest in a wave of groups that have been mushrooming across the nation in recent weeks. In this area, drew at least 1,000 participants at and Occupy Orange County has another demonstration planned for this week.

About 100 people are expected to turn out for the Encinitas demonstration — though, event organizers are hoping that there may be some more participants thanks to a community celebration for the late Encinitas Councilwoman Maggie Houlihan, which is happening one block away and will be ending as the protest begins. Occupy North County organizers rescheduled the protest for later in the day, in fact, out of respect for the memorial, said Dave Peiser, one of the group’s organizers and a longtime Encinitas resident.

Everyone is welcome to join in the peaceful demonstration, and encouraged to bring signs and American flags.
