The Rhoades School® Students Harvest Gardens and Host Farm Stand
Students held a farm stand to sell produce they grew in the school's gardens
Students at The Rhoades School in Encinitas recently celebrated Earth Day by hosting a farm stand to sell produce they harvested from the school’s gardens. Students sold carrots, peas, bok choy, lettuce and beets during their lunch period and raised more than $100 in sales. Since the beginning of the year, students have been working on the gardens, including constructing boxes to plant seeds and creating a school-wide system to compost fruits and vegetables from lunch waste. Students will use the funds raised from the farm stand to purchase additional supplies to maintain the gardens. The Rhoades School teaches the importance of community, exploring nature and environmental sustainability at a young age.
“We want our students to be leaders in the local community by participating in and developing a deep understanding of the issues and opportunities around sustainability and food production systems,” said Dr. Regina McDuffie, Head of School at The Rhoades School.
In September 2019, The Rhoades School will open a second campus, where the facilities will enable even greater emphasis on caring for the earth and environment.
