National Merit Scholarship Program
To qualify, Miles entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) in his junior year. Miles was selected as a semifinalist, a feat achieved by less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors.

SFC Mentors
“I was a terrible writer until I came to SFC my freshman year,” states Matey, “My teachers helped me substantially improve my critical reading and writing skills. With their help, I increased my scores on those sections of the test.” Under the mentorship of Mr. Maxon, Miles took Advanced Theory and Proof class, “With Mr. Maxon’s help, I received a perfect score on the math section of the PSAT.”

Becoming a Finalist
To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, participate in school and community activities, demonstrate leadership abilities, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. In addition to his outstanding academics, Miles has competed on the academic team, played basketball and is a member of the varsity math team.
The Future Looks Bright
Next year, Miles will attend the University of Oklahoma on a merit scholarship that includes benefits such as full tuition, room and board, and a computer. He plans to major in Finance and go on to attend law school.
Matt Hannan beams, “I am extremely proud of Miles and his designation as a National Merit Finalist. His dedication to academics and his pursuit of knowledge have separated him from 99.9% of all high school students and he is to be commended. Miles represents all aspects of Santa Fe Christian well and I could not be more pleased to serve as his principal; he is a great young man and I look forward to seeing the plans the Lord has for him in the future.”
The 2016 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
