Tough Night for Encinitas Little League All-Star Teams

The Encinitas National 11-12 All-Star team is eliminated while the Encinitas LL 10-11 squad suffers its first loss.

Chula Vista's Park View Little League program gained national attention two years ago when its 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars claimed the Little League world championship. A pair of Encinitas teams are finding that the 2011 version of Park View may be just as daunting.

In Southern California South Sub-Division games on Monday night, the Encinitas National 11-12 All-Stars saw their season come to an end in Fountain Valley with an 8-5 loss to Park View in seven innings. And at the Chollas Lake Little League field in San Diego, the Encinitas Little League 10-11 team was handed its first loss in All-Star play, also by Park View, in a 10-8 shootout.

Encinitas National lost its Sub-Divisional opener 9-6 to Park View on Saturday, but a 12-8 win over Fontana Community on Sunday earned ENLL another shot at Park View, which used a barrage of home runs to earn Monday's victory in an elimination game. Park View faces another elimination game Tuesday when it meets Canyon Springs, which handed PVLL its first loss in the tourney by a 6-2 count.

Encinitas Little League 10-11 team is now 9-1 in All-Star competition. Monday's game against Park View featured three lead changes and 21 hits, including 10 by ELL. Jared Jackson, Alec Varteressian and Kasey Cowan had home runs for Encinitas.

Jackson erased a 3-2 Park View lead with his three-run homer in the third, but Park View answered with a two-run shot to pull even at 5-5 after three. PVLL pulled out to an 8-5 advantage before Jackson's fourth RBI of the night made it a two-run game. Two more runs gave Park View a 10-6 lead after five before Varteressian and Cowan hit back-to-back homers leading off the sixth for the final runs of the game.

Three teams still have a chance to advance to the SoCal Championship against the winner of the North Sub-Division tourney. ELL faces a must-win situation on Tuesday in a 5:30 p.m. game at Chollas against Highland Little League of San Bernardino, a team it beat 16-13 in eight innings in the tournament opener.
