ENCINITAS, CA — A passenger train struck and killed a seemingly suicidal man Thursday afternoon on a stretch of rails near Swami's Beach, authorities reported.

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner was heading north through Encinitas at about 70 mph when the driver saw the pedestrian emerge from shrubbery on the west side of the tracks near East I Street and run toward the oncoming train shortly before 1 p.m., sheriff's Deputy Brian Abraham said.

Apparently ignoring the engineer's horn, the man, who appeared to be 60 to 70 years old, leaped in front of the train, Abraham said. The pedestrian, whose name was not available, died at the scene.
