WILDLIFE WALK AT SAN ELIJO LAGOON
Join San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy naturalists for a springtime walk along Rios Avenue Trail. Blue-eyed grass, lupine and California sunflower begin to splash the hillsides with color. Focus binoculars and cameras for opportunities to see Cormorants on the power poles at the inlet, Osprey, waterfowl, and the rare Clapper Rail. This is San Elijo Lagoon's south side, featuring riparian woodlands and coastal sage scrub, with intimate views of the salt marsh.
Wildlife Walks occur on various trails in San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve on 2nd Saturdays. The 979-acre reserve is home to 700 species of bird and plants. Although birds are the lagoon’s most photographed species, many mammals, fishes, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates depend on a range of habitats, extending from salt marsh and coastal sage to streamside areas. Wildlife Walks are FREE, and are made possible through San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy membership and educational sponsors.
