Great Escape: Take a Trip to Vintage LaLa Land With Charles Phoenix
Grand Performances at downtown's California Plaza celebrates 25 years with free summer events and a special fundraiser.
Journey into pop culture kitsch through the eyes of Charles Phoenix, who is renowned for his vintage take on LaLa Land. On Friday, Phoenix is bringing his latest project, Los Angelesland, to the California Plaza in downtown L.A. It's a free, live slide show celebrating the City of Angels as if it's one big theme park. He shows Hollywood, downtown, Boyle Heights and more of L.A. in a fun and whimsical way that no one ever has before.
Phoenix's show is part of the free Grand Performance Summer Series at California Plaza. The series brings together the diversity and culture of Los Angeles. There's something for all ages, but for adults it's a perfect time to escape and enjoy downtown L.A.
The summer event schedule includes global sounds, jazz, chamber music, mariachis, theater, dance and movies, as well as themes exploring women, Jewish culture, Boyle Heights, local artists and concerts on Fridays at noon.
Although all the events are free, the summer series is celebrating 25 years with a special fundraising event on July 9. One Night, One World, One Stage will be a giant cultural block party with art and entertainment from Scotland, Japan, Cuba, Peru, Tunisia and Angola. Tickets for dinner and entertainment start at $150.
Consider taking a trip downtown—drive or take the Metro Red Line. Just getting out of your element, even a few miles from home, might just give you a hint of inspiration or just a good breather.
