Any cocktail or tequila enthusiast knows that Añejo means “aged”…and in this context, maturity is indeed a very good thing. Although Añejo Cantina & Grill opened its doors just this past August, it runs as smoothly as a great añejo tequila tastes—and with a variety of notes and nuances that separate it from the competition. It feels like it has been around a long time, because everybody involved knows what they’re doing. The management and staff at the 11,000 square-foot space keeps things humming, from the upscale Mexican creations being built in the kitchen, to addictive guacamole being prepared tableside to the unique specialty cocktails prepared and poured at the bar (especially such favorites as the Cucumber Martini, Paloma Negra, Bloody Maria and Ultimate Skinny-Rita).
It’s not only the edible and potable delights at the Añejo Cantina & Grill that make an impression. The indoor-outdoor space takes on the character of a posh Mexican resort. A gorgeous outdoor area with fire-pits on the balcony is particularly lively, while its separate banquet room that is soundproof for private parties, DJs, bands, etc. can be tailored and customize for any kind of fiesta dictated by a client. On weekends, Thursday through Sunday, one can expect live music performed by a variety of acts, ranging from classic mariachi and flamenco bands to eclectic pop acts with mixed Latin influences. It’s enough to make you forget you’re not on vacation, even though the restaurant is centrally located (easily accessible from the 405 and 101 freeways) and has ample free parking.
Añejo’s menu is packed with everybody’s favorite Mexican comfort foods, from made-to-order Taquitos, Tostada de Ceviche to Nachos, Queso Fundido, Añejo Platter of mixed finger foods and mix-and-match combo plates. There are also tasty alternatives, such as Chicken Avocado Salad and Chicken Tortilla Soup, for those looking to eat lighter without compromising flavor. However, for choosy customers looking for something new to try, the Especiales de La Casa menu fits the bill with such choices as Grilled Chili Relleno, Camarones ala Diabla, Housemade Tamales, Oxacan-influenced Mole De Pollo or Morjarra (fried whole tilapia fish with a savory salsa roja). The restaurant is also home to one of the best happy hours in the Valley, with a wide variety of food and cocktail specials to choose from.
While everything about the menus and attitude are fresh and new, it says something that a restaurant that’s opened so recently has been touted a Diner’s Choice Winner by OpenTable.com.
