“We are delighted that sophomore Greta Browne has received a silver medal for her personal essay! It’s been many years since a Louisville student has received a medal in the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition, 1988 to be exact when Anita Moore’s photograph won a gold and toured the country,” cheered Louisville High School’s Visual Arts Chairman, Elizabeth Dupuy. Greta’s personal essay, Red Marks on Your Soul was chosen from among tens of thousands of applicants at the regional level, where she received a gold key. Her memoir was then allowed to go on to the national competition where only the top 1% of applicants receive further honors. Over 300,000 submissions were received at the national level of Scholastic competition this year from students in grades 7-12. The Scholastic Awards have been in place for 92 years and now Greta joins the ranks of luminaries such as Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Stephen King (to name just a few) who also won medals when they were high school students. The medal ceremony takes place at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June.
