Snail-Speed Police Chase Creates Spectacle In The Valley

A suspected car thief and drunken driver led police on a 90-minute chase going about 5-10 miles per hour as bystanders attempted to join in

ENCINO, CA — A man suspected of drunkenly driving a stolen car lead police on an epically slow-speed chase through the San Fernando Valley, ending with her arrest in Encino Thursday night. The chase, which lumbered along at 5-10 miles per hour, was going so slow multiple PIT maneuvers were ineffective.

The meandering chase began at 10:15 p.m. near Sherman Way in Wilbur Avenue in Reseda and lasted for about 90 minutes. The driver rolled over a spike strip and kept going. Emboldened bystanders got out of their cars and attempted to join in the chase, KTLA reported.

The chase ended when officers performed a successful PIT maneuver, blocking the car on on Ventura Boulevard near Woodley Avenue. Once blocked in, the driver surrendered to police. The man was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto.
