The Going Rate: Frozen Yogurt

It seems like self-serve frozen yogurt stores are popping up everywhere.  So this week, we scoped out the froyo scene.  From pricing and seating to sampling and flavor variety, we've got you covered.  Here's the scoop:

Menchies is very popular. Anytime you visit there are sure to be lots of people and families. This place attracts a crowd because it's self serve with a wide variety of toppings and the most indoor and outdoor seating of all the competitors. They have very friendly staff, and you can take as many sample cups as needed when trying flavors. All this for 39 cents per ounce! Yes, it's more pricey than the others, but the stores offers many fresh toppings that aren't offered in other frozen yogurts establishments.>> 17245 Ventura Blvd., (818) 990-1500.

Yogurt Zone is chic. It offers indoor seating with '80s decor, white couch-like seating, floral wall paper and hanging light fixtures. There's a very cheerful atmosphere with quick service. You have lots of options, but Pink Lemonade Tart and Plain Tart are very tasty. For $4.05 you can get three toppings and as many flavors in a baby size. Looking to enjoy froyo in a more quiet establishment? Try Purenaked Yogurt, located next to Coral Tree Cafe. It's not typically packed, but that's because guests eat outside on seating shared with the Coral Tree Cafe. They serve all natural frozen yogurt with their own lingo. The Half Naked (two toppings) is $2.95, and the Fully Dressed (three toppings) is $4.95. For froyo lovers who would rather have someone else create their treat, this place is for you! Yogurtland is now serving Encino. Or, rather, you serve yourself. Yogurtland is located in Encino Commons. There are lots of flavors to choose from, but the Plain Tart and Lemonade Passion Fruit Tart will never disappoint. The going rate for regular size with unlimited toppings is 30 cents per ounce. Sweet Treats is an ice cream, cake and yogurt establishment. It used to be Baskin-Robbins, but it's still owned by the same family. Here, you'll find very friendly owners and staff who let you sample different flavors.
