Valley Man Drowns in Pool

Northridge, CA -- A 79-year-old man was pronounced dead today after being pulled from the bottom of a backyard pool in Northridge.

Firefighters called about 4:30 p.m. to the 19500 block of Nashville Street, near Vanalden Avenue, found the man in the bottom of the pool and dove in to retrieve him, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

They pulled him out and attempted to resuscitate him, but he was beyond help, Humphrey said.

The victim's spouse reported seeing the victim at the pool about 4 p.m. and said he was known to swim alone.
It was not immediately clear if the man simply drowned or if a separate medical emergency was involved.
