Observational Research Studies

The four observational studies scientists reviewed had 133,118 participants. Scientists took blood pressure readings and measured sodium consumption for each of these individuals for approximately four years. Some individuals who participated did not struggle from high blood pressure, while the remaining others did.

The Results

For the 69,559 people who consumed more than seven grams of sodium and did not have hypertension, results showed they did not increase their chances for cardiovascular diseases or death. For the remaining individuals who consumed less than three grams, there was a 26% increased for risk of death or cardiovascular disease. For the people who already had high blood pressure, when they consumed more than seven grams of sodium a day, they increased their chances of getting a heart disease by 24%. On the other hand, when these same individuals consumed less than three grams, they increased their chance by 34%. These results were very surprising for scientists.
