Words of Not-So-Much Wisdom

Inspired by everything from celebrity scandals to fashionable footwear, new words are rapidly expanding this Encino mom's vocabulary.

Last week, we all heard about the sex scandal involving New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. But in discussing it while letting my nails dry at Prida Salon (just over the Encino border in Sherman Oaks) I also learned a new word, tweety. That’s the moniker a fellow client used to describe the woman Weiner meant to send the scary underwear photo to before accidentally posting it on Twitter instead.

Tweety, she explained, is the recipient of a sexually suggestive (usually private) message or picture delivered via Twitter. It’s the same as a sextee, except that a sextee receives messages by text.

It’s only June and already – with the addition of tweety and sextee – I’ve increased my vocabulary with 10 new words in 2011.  That’s nearly as many words as

Given the robust growth, which I’m confident will continue, I decided to share my mid-year collection this week.

So here goes:

GlaMa – This is a woman who is technically a senior citizen and/or grandmother, but refuses to act old, go gray and dress frumpy. Think Blyth Danner and Goldie Hawn. Or in other words, 60 is the new 40. I like.

Sheening – It seems like eons ago that we all watched actor Charlie Sheen melt down in real time on TV, but it was just three months ago. And while the terminated Two and a Half Men star is no longer winning, the verb his antics inspired lives on. According to Urban Dictionary, Sheening (variations include Sheened and Sheener) connotes partying, questionable decision-making and public humiliation.

Tweeple My 15-year-old son clued me in on this one, which refers to people who tweet. Related terms include: tweeter, which is the singular of tweeple and tweetspeak, which is the act of conveying a message in the 140 characters limited on Twitter. My son and I are booth tweeple, by the way. You can follow me @Susan_Spillman.

Jelly/Jellybean – I picked this word up from the gals on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. It’s high-end slang for jealous. For example: Kyle thought Lisa was jelly of her friendship with Taylor. And that makes Lisa a total Jellybean.

Moobs – Man boobs.

Flatforms  - A cross between a ballet flat and a platform. The newest footwear fashion seen on spring runways has one long platform that runs the length of the shoe. They are supposedly comfortable, but picturing myself in a pair, I see an accident waiting to happen.

Reality Challenged – The inability for a person to distinguish fact from fiction, be it someone well-known such as Congressman Weiner or your boss.

HAGS – Initially, I was concerned to find this strange word scrawled throughout my daughter’s yearbook by both friends and teachers, until she informed me that it is an acronym for Have a Great Summer.
