Fire Briefly Threatens Homes, Forces Evacuations In San Marcos
The blaze broke out near state Route 78 and South Rancho Santa Fe Avenue.

SAN MARCOS, CA – A small brush fire briefly threatened homes and prompted evacuations Friday morning in San Marcos.
The blaze broke out around 9 a.m. near state Route 78 and South Rancho Santa Fe Avenue, San Marcos spokeswoman Sarah MacDonald said.
Deputies evacuated several homes on De Leone Road, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, but crews knocked down the fire by about 10 a.m. The blaze spread across a 50-by-50 feet area.

No injuries or significant damage was reported.
Eastbound South Rancho Santa Fe Road at Las Flores Drive was expected to be closed until noon so firefighters could clear partially burned trees and mop up the area, MacDonald said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, but there have been unconfirmed reports of a discarded cigarette thrown from a vehicle, according to sheriff's officials.
