UPDATE: Child Dead, Eight Others Injured in Escondido Mobile Home Fire

A fire at an Escondido mobile home in San Diego's North County killed a 5-year-old girl and injured eight of her relatives early Thursday.

ESCONDIDO, CA – A 5-year-old girl was killed and eight of her relatives, including another child, were injured early Thursday in an Escondido mobile home fire that was sparked by faulty Christmas lights.

The house fire at Greencrest Mobile Home Park at 541 West 15th Avenue was reported shortly after 12:30 a.m., according to the Escondido Fire Department. Escondido Fire Battalion Chief Art Holcomb said it took crews about 35 minutes to subdue the flames.

The girl died in the destroyed home. Holcomb said eight other people, all members of the same extended family, were transported to trauma centers, mostly for treatment of smoke inhalation. Fire officials told Fox 5 that CPR was performed on a 10-year-old boy while he was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The fire caused minor damage to several adjacent mobile homes. Fire officials told Fox 5 that it appears a faulty electrical cord to lights on a Christmas tree sparked the blaze.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family. The 5-year-old girl who died is pictured wearing pink and is shown with her parents and two brothers.
