San Marcos Dante Carey Finds Success in his 19th year as basketball coach

Willauer-Contributing Writer-February 7, 2025-San Marcos High School-San Marcos, CA: The Knights of San Marcos known for their tradition in athletics once again rule the gymnasium tonight as they defeated the Titans of Poway by an 60-39 score and with the victory they improve their record to 23-3 under 19th year head coach Dante Carey. This is Coach Carey's 11 20 game total victories.

At the beginning of the season the Knights were defeated by Montgomery, Mater Dei and Lincoln High from Stockton, CA in a tournament

In tonight's contest vs. Poway the Knights were led by Jalen Williams with 13, Richie Ramirez and Chris Crowell each with 12 and Elias Flaim with 10 along with an 8 game victory streak

Coate Dante Carey: "It feels good to get the win tonight, Head Coach Corey Clark does a great job at Poway as they defended well on defense." "They played their best game today but we didn't execute well on offense."

" We have two shooters that can shoot the ball when they are open and need to work on taking the correct shots." "Poway has a lot of shooters and talent, Grant Rodriguez shot the ball well but defensively we played very well guarding some of their players said." Coach Carey.

San Marcos travels to Westview High to take on the Wildcats and will host Mission HIlls in a Discovery Bowl battle tapoff is 7 PM

In 1998 Coach Carey graduated from San Marcos playing basketball all 4 years His freshman and sophomore years came off the bench and in his last 2 started on the squad while becoming the school's All Time Assists Leader

Palomar and San Francisco State 2 years each. "At Palomar College I stayed local with my friends, as the Comets had a good team with Mission Hills girls head coach and Palomar Comets assistant basketball coach Chris Kroech then going to San Francisco State I had an excellent career there". said Coach Carey.

First year as head coach in 2006-2007 the Knights went 10-15 2007-08 17-11 2008-09 17-11 2009-10 registered his first 20 win season in school history after that currently has 11 20 win seasons.

"After graduating from San Francisco State I started as a JV head coach at Francis Parker School with Head Coach Ryan Meyer, since a lot of kids stay in private school I wanted to have them stay in this area." said coach Carey.

Coach Carey on his 300th career win in 2022: "I registered my 300th career win at the Mission Bay High School Basketball Tournament, I was very pleased about my career win."

On Coach Carey's 11th 20 win season at San Marcos: "I didn't know it until you just spoke to me about the info, it's not about me it's the kids they come here to work hard." "My staff is the longevity of that." "Coaching basketball is a long season as we continue year around working for us to be successful

On the 8 game win streak 23-3 ranked in San Diego Section "There are a lot of outstanding teams in the San Diego area with a lot of good teams that are currently ranked as in the beginning of the season, we played tough teams from Lincoln from Stockton CA has an outstanding basketball club they are talented as in Mater Dei in Orange County is outstanding as we played a good game against them," "Montgomery from East County area is one of the speedier teams as they are like a well oiled machine." said Coach Carey.

Preparing for Westview and Mission Hills: " Right now we have to get to Westview this coming Tuesday if we can play good solid basketball we will be ready for Mission HIlls. "said Coach Carey
