Discovery Isle Students Release Praying Mantises for Earth Day

Students celebrate Earth Day and protecting the environment by releasing beneficial bugs into their schoolyard to help local vegetation

In celebration of Earth Day, students at Discovery Isle Preschool in San Marcos explored a bug’s life as they released praying mantises throughout the schoolyard and back into the environment on plants, flowers and trees. Leading up to Earth Day, students learned that praying mantises serve as a natural pesticide by feeding on insects that could otherwise harm the health of gardens, trees and shrubs. Leading up to the release, students were able to observe the praying mantis eggs and watch them hatch.

Students also participated in a variety of other Earth Day activities, including picking up trash, creating a robot with recycled materials, and planting new plants in the school’s friendship gardens. Discovery Isle teaches the importance of conservation and exploring nature at an early age.
