Pedestrian Fatally Struck On Escondido Roadway

A pedestrian was struck and killed while walking on a street north of Lake Hodges in Escondido, authorities said.

ESCONDIDO, CA — A pedestrian was struck and killed while walking on a street north of Lake Hodges in Escondido, authorities said Wednesday.

Dispatchers received multiple calls around 7:10 p.m. Tuesday from motorists who reported seeing a man walking in the middle of the roadway on West Via Rancho Parkway near Purer Road and "acting erratically," California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.

Callers told dispatchers it was difficult to see the pedestrian, Latulippe said.

Around 15 minutes later, the man was struck by an Infiniti sedan driven by a 47-year-old San Diego woman heading westbound on West Via Rancho Parkway, the officer said.

Several good Samaritans stopped to try to help the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Latulippe said.

The man remained unidentified Tuesday night but appeared to be 18 to 25 years old, he said.

The Infiniti driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Latulippe said, adding that she was not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
