Crews Rescue Man Threatening To Jump From SR-78 Overpass [UPDATE]

An area near Centre City Parkway in Escondido was closed during the incident.

ESCONDIDO, CA – UPDATE: FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 3:15 p.m.

A possible suicide was averted today on a SR-78 overpass in Escondido where a 22-year-old man reportedly was threatening to jump onto northbound Centre City Parkway, the California Highway Patrol said this afternoon.

Officers were called at approximately 8:35 a.m. to the area and closed an eastbound lane of SR-78 and northbound Centre City Parkway.

Shortly after 12 noon, negotiators from the Escondido police and fire departments, as well as the CHP, were able to safely take the Escondido resident into custody and transfer him to a treatment facility, the agency said.

No one was injured during the incident.

UPDATE: FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 12:05 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a suspect is in custody following the morning closure of a stretch of SR-78 in Escondido.

"Lanes should be open shortly," the agency said at 12 noon.

No additional details were released.

Police activity in Escondido this afternoon has shut down one lane of eastbound SR-78, according the the Oceanside office of the California Highway Patrol.

The affected area is at Centre City Parkway and Mission Avenue.

Officers are asking residents to avoid the area and to use alternative routes into and out of Escondido,
