What is drunk driving? You would think the answer is a simple one, but for many people that is far from the case. Even upon arrest they will deny they are drunk because they just don’t think of the impairment they suffer from alcohol. For many the reality will only hit them when the damage is long lasting such as an accident leading to serious injury or death.
Laws are Not Enough to Solve the Problem
Unfortunately laws for drunk driving are not enough to put a stop to the problem. If everyone was a law-abiding citizens and understood their short-comings this would be enough, but unfortunately this doesn’t happen. What do people misinterpret their capabilities when it comes to drinking and driving? There are several reasons this may happen, especially if there are teenagers involved:

- Showing off for friends
- Embarrassment over their inability to hold their alcohol
- Unwillingness to admit they are too drunk to drive
- Too embarrassed to ask for a ride home and no money to call a taxi
While there are probably many more reasons that play a role in the picture, these are the most common one. With teenagers it may also be fear of calling their parents and being punished for drinking in the first place. Teenagers Create an Additional Problem

Drunken drivers on the road are a big problem already, but when you add teenagers and drunk driving into the mix the problem is even worse. Teenagers are inexperienced drivers at best and they haven’t yet grasped the concept of when to stop drinking (of course there are adults who have that problem as well, but teenagers create a bigger risk). Perhaps we can solve a big portion of the problem if we can somehow manage to convince teenagers of the risks involved with drunken driving. Unfortunately that will be a tough call with “immortals.”
Developing a Solution
Are there feasible drunk driving solutions? Certainly solutions are possible, but those that would be designed better to solve the problem such as mandatory breath tests before the vehicle will move are both expensive and easy to manipulate. For instance, could a drunk driver have someone else take the taste for him and then switch seats? The ignition is still on, so wouldn’t that be possible? Someone might also be technically savvy enough to learn how to manipulate the system. Technical solutions are a long way off—education is currently our best alternative to the problem.
What is drunk driving? Those who don’t know the answer to the question are probably the ones who don’t belong behind the wheel of a car. There are existing laws for drunk driving that should also have an effect on teenagers and drunk driving, but unfortunately this is not the case because teenagers believe they are immortal. We need more drunk driving solutions but at the present time our best solution is education.
