Contact Your Creditors

The minute you realize that you’re in trouble financially, contact your creditors. Often, they’ll help you work out a plan to pay off what you owe them. The plan may involve giving you more time to repay the debt or agreeing to reduce the principal of it so your payments are lower. Remember, though, that they can’t help you if they don’t know there’s a problem, so get in touch with them right away.

Find a good credit restoration program and put it to work for you. There are suggested programs such as Dave Ramsey’s “Debt Snowball” plan available online, but you can also devise your own system of debt repayment. Start by gathering up all of your debt documentation ad prioritizing it. You can do this based on the interest rates of the debts or on how much you owe; just get them in order so you know what you’re dealing with. From there, it’s up to you how you wish to address paying them off.

Hire a Credit Restoration Service

If you look on the Internet, you’ll find lots of ads for these companies. They promise to fix your poor credit rating through debt consolidation or other means. If you choose one of the supposed cheap credit repair services to help you out, don’t be disappointed if they aren’t very effective. In fact, there’s nothing that they can do for you that you can’t do yourself, so think about that before you give one of these companies any money.

Get Extra Money

The most effective way to improve your credit is to pay off all of your debt. If you don’t have the money to do it right now, try any of these ideas: Hire yourself out as a handyman or –woman. Borrow it from your cousin Pete. Use your savings. Okay, you don’t have to empty your savings account, but using part of it for debt repayment goes a long way toward addressing how to restore bad credit.  Sell some unwanted or extra stuff. Put the equity in your home toward your debt.
