Blog: 5 Things That Aren't True About Dieting

You know all those rules about dieting that everyone talks about? Turns out some of them aren't all that true after all. Check out these 5 dieting myths!

With spring coming around, things growing, spring cleaning commencing, a lot of us tend to notice how things are being renewed, changed for the better.

I think a lot of us will probably look to start that diet we've been talking about during this season for just that reason. But, before you go off and start your diet, there are five things that Huffington Post thinks you ought to know.

As it turns out, some of those hard and fast rules for dieting that we keep hearing about, aren't exactly as true as we may think them to be.

Myth#1 A detox diet is a must

These things seem to be exploding right now, and I had even been considering doing something similar for awhile, but, as it turns out, there isn't much proof that they do much good. The body is built to detoxify itself, so the best thing you can do is help it along by regularly eating fruits, vegetables, and drinking water. Not taking a week to eat next to nothing or drink some strange "health" drink for your meals.

Myth#2 Frozen fruits and veggies lack some of their original nutrients.

This really is not altogether true. A lot of frozen fruits and vegetables can be just as healthy as fresh ones. This is because many of these foods are picked at their peak freshness and frozen as soon as possible. This means that they have just as much, if not more, nutrients as their fresh counterparts. If you do choose to go the frozen route though, you'll want to avoid those with added sugar, or are in a sugary syrup to avoid the excess sugar and fat.

Myth#3 Food eaten after a certain time goes straight to your gut.

Eating food after a certain time will not make you bigger. Too much caloric intake paired with not enough exercise will. This myth is around due to the fact that many people eat copius amounts of popcorn, chips, candy, etc. later at night, which, without exercise to work them off, will turn into fat. So just make sure your balancing your intake with your exercise and you'll be fine.

Myth#4 Eggs will wreck your cholesterol.

People's opinions on the egg tend to go up and down a lot. But recent research shows us that one egg a day is alright for the majority of healthy people. They are an awesome source of protein, contain vitamins A, D, and B, and contain lutein, which will help keep your eyes healthy. Bear in mind, however, that one egg has 173 mg of cholesterol, and the reccommended limit is about 300 mg.

Myth#5 Carbs make you fat.

Carbs are in pretty much everything that we eat, from dairy, to pasta, to bread, to rice, and many other foods. To remove all these things from your diet would probably not be healthy. Carbs are really necessary for our health and are what our bodies prefer to use for energy. The key is to make sure that we use the carbs that we take in, and to eat healthier carbs, such as whole grains.

Even though a lot of this seems like common sense, I hope that it helps, and I wish you good luck on your diet this spring season.
