In today's world, everyone is looking to get ahead, everyone wants to be recognized as someone special, everybody wants to lead in some capacity. And in all reality, we are all leaders in some sphere or another. Whether it's in the workplace, our schools, or our own families, we are leading someone, somewhere.

• Lead by Example

People will be much more likely to follow you if you show that you live out what you expect from others. If there's one thing that people hate, it's hypocrites. So conversely, people will respect you and follow your example if you show that you live by the same standards and guidelines that you expect from them.

• Pay Attention

A good leader won't ignore his or her followers. They will take the time to make sure that their followers know that their leader empathizes with them on a deeper level. This leads to an environment whiere people feel appreciated, respected and heard.

• Show Your Commitment

People won't follow a person if they don't know that they are committed to the cause. The greatest leaders show that they are commited, driven, and passionate about their work. They are willing to make personal sacrifices for the sake of the people or oraganization that they are leading. 

• Inspire Your Followers

We all know the classic movie scene of a general addressing his troops from horseback just before riding out to battle. His words are so firey, so alive, so inspiring that any doubt or fear in his soldiers are put to rest and we know that those men will follow their leader to the ends of the earth. While this scene may be a tad cliche, it's principle is none the less true. If you can inspire your followers, paint a picture for them of the goal that is so vibrant, so alive, they will follow you through thick and thin and the best leaders know this.

• Invest Time in Your Followers

Once someone becomes a leader, their duty becomes less to themsleves and more to their followers. It becomes their job to help nurture and grow their followers into the people that they need to be. A good leader will do this because they know that in order for their team to be as effective as possible, they need their whole team to be the best that they can be.

To summarize, there are a few things that you need to do in order to be a good leader. You need to believe in your cause, whatever that may be, and be willing to sacrifice for it, to follow it passionately. You need to be willing to invest time into your followers and to make sure they feel appreciated. You need to be willing to do what it takes to win the hearts and the trust of those who follow you. Do these things, and you will become an effective leader.
