On This Date in Fair Oaks History: A Woman's Thursday Club is Formed
On this date in Fair Oaks history, 110 years ago, the Woman's Thursday Club was formed.
On This Day in Fair Oaks History - March 1, 2012
On March 1, 1902, a dozen or so Fair Oaks women got together to form the Woman's Thursday Club of Fair Oaks. The impetus for the club came from Madam Buffum, the club's first president, and was geared toward replacing some of the social activity the early Fair Oaks women sorely missed from their previous Chicago city lifestyles. The nearest cultural center was Sacramento, and that was a full day's trip.
The original Woman's Thursday Club was organized for "literary, musical and social activities." Over the years, the club expanded its activities to charity and philanthropy, and today has 124 members involved in Fair Oaks community affairs. Meetings are the second Thursday of each month from October through May at their clubhouse at 10625 Fair Oaks Blvd.
