Rio Americano Cross Country Runners Advance to Section Championships

Rio Americano senior Macaulay Porter wins CAL Varsity Girls Cross country title. Rio Americano cross country teams do well at CAL Finals and Sac-Joaquin Subsection meet.

Rio Americano senior Macaulay Porter won the Capital Athletic League (CAL) varsity girls cross country championship at William Jessup University in Lincoln on October 26, 2012, and led the Rio Americano girls to a second place finish. Porter, juniors Elizabeth Hutchison and Ariel Young earned all-league honors.

Rio Americano senior George Halvorsen, junior Kenji Anzai, and freshman Evan Cross achieved all-league honors in the CAL varsity boys race, and led the Rio Americano boys team to a 2nd place finish.

Next, the Rio Americano Boys and Girls varsity cross country teams both qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, by placing among the top 10 teams at the Sac-Joaquin Subsection Meet held at Frogtown, Angels Camp on November 3, 2012. Senior Macaulay Porter and junior Elizabeth Hutchison earned individual medals in the girls varsity race and led their team to a 3rd place finish (out of 19 teams). Junior Kenji Anzai and senior George Halvorsen earned individual medals in the boys varsity race and paced the boys to a 9th place finish (out of 28 teams).

Freshmen Chris Harris and Nathan Shaldone earned individual medals in the frosh boys race, and sophomore Blythe Nishi, juniors Gwendolyn Giles and Ilana Weissberg and senior Courtney Craney earned individual medals in the girls JV race, and both the freshman boys and JV girls teams also qualified for the section championships.

The Sac-Joaquin Section Championships are being held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Folsom High School in Folsom. The varsity girls race starts at 12:40 pm and the varsity boys race is at 1:45 pm.
