A recent study out of Harvard associates low libido and erectile dysfunction with increased amounts of soy in men's diets, especially those who are vegan. While soy protein consumption has been linked to lower cardiovascular disease, and helps women through menopause, men and boys should not eat it because it lowers testosterone levels which can affect everything from energy levels to muscular and brain health.
If you are looking for healthy alternatives to soy, whey protein is very good as it is a complete protein, and helps the liver produce anti-oxidants and increases detoxification. Rice and pea protein when mixed together also provide a complete protein. When I refer to a "complete" protein, that means it contains all the essential amino acids a body needs. Vegetable proteins are not complete and must be mixed with other things in order to get all the necessary amino acids for proper body function.
Many meal replacement bars, protein bars and workout or weight loss shakes use soy protein, so read the label to make sure you aren't doing your body a disservice while trying to be healthy.
