'Celebration' Set For Shooting Victim

Flash mob to be launched by dancers during service for Joseph Long this Sunday.

A celebration of Joseph Allen Long's life to be held this weekend will encapsulate his joyful, eccentric personality through impromptu dancing. 

To be held Sunday, September 2 at 1 p.m. at the California State University, Sacramento Alumni Center, the event is open to friends, family and the public. At some point during the memorial service, a group that will include Long's mother will bust out dancing "flash mob" style, according to the event posted on Facebook.

The 32-year-old Carmichael man, an active and popular member of the Sacramento dance scene, shortly after midnight August 18 after walking two women to their car in Midtown.

Acocording to police, Long was an innocent bystander, hit by a stray bullet from across a parking lot at J and 28th streets, during an altercation between two groups of people. The police investigation is still active, a Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman said, but on Monday there was no new information to be released to the public.

"This is serious – Mr. Long was not the intended target," said SPD Spokeswoman Michele Gigante. "We're asking for any potential witnesses to please get in touch with us. We're still looking for more information to piece this together."

Long as a "larger than life" personality whose powerful presence was felt by all. He was said to be a very in-demand dancer who complemented his partners well, while shining brightly upon those around him.
