Robert Dunn, a dental technician specialist for dogs and cats, said that animals can get gingivitis and gum disease just like people. In addition, they also continually ingest the bacteria that develop in their mouths.

Instead of using anesthesia, Dunn wraps the animals in a towel, which he said is used to comfort, not restrain them. He said putting animals under anesthesia just for a teeth cleaning is unnecessary.

“We take it one tooth at a time,” Dunn said.

The most important thing to do is comfort and praise the animals while they are being treated.

“They actually like it once they get used to it,” Dunn said.
