Crime Blotter June 14-27: Rumors of Pot Fuel Attempted Home Invasion

Shot fired inside apartment draws consequences.

Chasing a rumor

Two Carmichael men were among those arrested earlier this month during an attempted home invasion in Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the four apprehended male subjects had targeted the residence in the 3000 block of Scotland Drive because they believed in contained marijuana. During the attempted break-in, around 1 a.m. on June 14, a 31-year-old male resident of the home phoned 911.

Sheriff’s department spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos said the suspects continued trying to force their way into the house after authorities were called, but sheriff’s units arrived within four minutes to interrupt the would-be robbers.

Ramos said the four suspects — which included two unnamed 17-year-olds as well as RV Allahali Watson, 21, and Darren Lorenzo Payne, 20, both of Carmichael — were either arrested giving up at the scene or else picked up attempting to flee nearby.

Watson was reportedly armed with a loaded, stolen handgun.

Both Watson and Payne were arraigned two days later in Sacramento Superior Court on counts of first degree attempted burglary, attempted robbery and resisting arrest. Watson also faces a gun possession charge.

The two men are scheduled for settlement conferences on July 11.

As for rumors of the home containing marijuana, which one of the 17-year-olds told authorities he heard from his father, officers said the residence smelled strongly of the drug but didn’t locate any, according to Ramos.

Unwise discharge

A Sacramento man faces criminal charges of making like Yosemite Sam and shooting a gun into the air while indoors.

Only this time, prosecutors say 30-year-old Daryl Woods endangered the life of a 3-year-old child sleeping on a nearby couch when he fired one round from his semi-automatic 9mm handgun into the ceiling of a two-story apartment just north of Carmichael around 11 p.m. on June 18.

Investigators believe a physical fight with his girlfriend’s brother at a residence in the 5000 block of Garfield Avenue preceded Woods’ reckless behavior.

A sheriff’s department report says Woods retrieved the handgun from the second floor of the two-story apartment before coming back downstairs and firing off a round into the ceiling.

The report said Woods’ physical altercation was with an 11-year-old female, but Ramos said it was with his girlfriend’s brother.

After the gunshot, the victim left the apartment and called authorities, Ramos said. Woods was arrested by responding deputies.

He was arraigned Monday in Sacramento Superior Court on felony counts of child endangerment and discharging a firearm with gross negligence and a misdemeanor count of brandishing a firearm.
