Annual Speech Contest - Fair Oaks Rotary

The Rotary Club of Fair Oaks will host its annual speech contest for high school students on Monday, February 25, at their regular meeting.  Five speakers from Bella Vista High School will be competing, and each participant will speak for five to eight minutes.  Each speaker will strive to deliver a compelling message on “Peace Through Service”, this year's Rotary theme.  Cash prizes will be given to winning students starting with $200 for the first place winner. 


The speech contest will be held in the lower level of the Fair Oaks Clubhouse, located in Village Park. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and the dinner ($15/person) meeting starts at 7 pm.  Speeches by the students will begin by 7:45.  Family and friends from the community are welcome to join us.


Fair Oaks Rotary sponsors a number of student and literacy activities every year.  In 2012-13, these include:

  • A major remodel of the children’s area at the Fair Oaks Library and purchase of books along with the Fair Oaks Library and The Friends of the Library

  • Dictionaries for all local third graders

  • Volunteer readers at Northridge Elementary School on “Read Across America” day

  • After-school homework assistance by Rotary members

  • Rotary Youth Leadership Academy for high school students each summer

  • Cash awards for meritorious graduating high school seniors

  • Quarterly student recognition awards at Northridge Elementary School

  • Sponsorship of international exchange students each school year

  • Holiday food packages for over 80 families with children in local elementary schools


This speech contest is part of a much larger speech contest sponsored by Rotary District 5180 for the Greater Sacramento Area.  In all, 35 local Rotary clubs will hold high school speech contests between February 6 and March 15.  Winners of the club speech contests will move up to regional speech contests, and winners of the regional contests will compete for a top prize of $1,000 at the District 5180 speech contest.
