Student Video Contest Showcases Water Efficiency Finalists will be Unveiled on Raley Field Jumbotron

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Regional Water Authority (RWA) and Sacramento Bee Media in Education (MIE) program are pleased to announce the 2013 Water Spots Video Contest.

The contest challenges teens to create compelling and original 25-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos on a select water efficiency topic. The contest is open to high school students in Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties plus the city of West Sacramento.

Winners will be announced at a Sacramento River Cats game in spring 2013, and winning spots will be displayed on the Raley Field Jumbotron screen. Winning students and teachers will also get cash prizes. The grand prize winner’s spot may become part of RWA’s 2013 television ad campaign.

PSA videos must focus on the selected 2013 water efficiency theme: Check sprinkler systems every month for water-wasting problems and make repairs within 48 hours. Judging will be based on creativity, entertainment value, accuracy, originality and incorporation of the water efficiency topic.

"Water Spots taps into the limitless creativity of Sacramento-area students to convey a very

important message--that residents should be checking their sprinkler system every month for  broken, leaking, clogged or misdirected sprinkler heads and other water-wasting problems," said Amy Talbot, Regional Water Authority Water Efficiency Program Manager. "We look forward to another year of impressive entries."

The first Water Spots contest attracted nearly 90 entries from high school students throughout the Sacramento region. From raps and jingles to serious messages about water scarcity, Sacramento-area high school students showed off their original ideas about using water efficiently outdoors.

More than 65 percent of a household’s yearly water consumption typically goes toward landscape irrigation. Of that, 30 percent is lost due to overwatering and evaporation. Data shows that by being more efficient and stopping water waste, residents could save enough water to meet the drinking needs of more than 135,000 families for a year or to fill nearly 1.5 million backyard swimming pools. Go to www.BeWaterSmart.info for more information or tips on using water more efficiently.

Water Spots Video Contest entries are due by Friday, March 22, 2013. Students are encouraged to discuss the project with their high school video and multimedia teacher before submitting an entry.
