Fair Oaks Senior Graduates without Setting Foot in a Classroom

Local graduates from California Virtual Academy@ Sutter celebrate their achievements in a community ceremony.

This week, California Virtual Academy@ Sutter high school senior, Sam Krug from Fair Oaks, logged off for the last time and bid a final farewell to his full-time, online charter school. What’s unique about that? Sam spent nearly his entire school life at the tuition-free online school.

Since first grade, Sam studied daily with online and offline materials and with the support of California-credentialed teachers and his “learning coach,” his mother. Online school allowed him to discover his passion—athletic training (the professionals who assist athletes on the field, court, etc. when a player is injured).

Sam will pursue that passion at Grand Canyon University in Arizona this fall where he was awarded the “Presidential” Academic Scholarship, the second highest award at the university. It will cover 90 percent of his academic tuition expenses for as long as he maintains his academic performance.

Sam joined nearly 100 other classmates in Vacaville on June 11 for an in-person graduation ceremony. For many it was the first time they met each other and their teachers face to face outside of their virtual classrooms. Sam spoke of this graduation experience saying, “It was great to see some of my classmates in person. We were able to develop an instant kinship over the course of the ceremony despite having never met.” The ceremony was made even more special for Sam as he was presented his diploma by his older brother Ben, also a graduate of California Virtual Academy@ Sutter.

At California Virtual Academy@ Sutter, teachers work with students in grades K-12 through an interactive digital learning platform to create individualized plans, focused on their unique learning needs, goals, and interests.
