Learn Sustainable Landscaping Tricks and More Saturday
Blue Thumb Garden party will transform two garden areas with 'beautiful low water use plants, drip irrigation and more efficient sprinklers.'

Saturday's Blue Thumb Garden party in Carmichael will include a hands-on workshop that shows sustainable landscaping practices.
From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 3422 Riverdale Way in Carmichael, the event is open to area residents and Blue Thumb Neighbors participants.
According to a flyer on the event, discussion topics will include:

- Soil and Soil Amendments - How the site was prepared and use of compost.
- Hydrozones, Plants and Planting - The garden's hydrozones, landscape design plan, and plant list; how to space plants based upon mature size, install plants.

- Efficient Garden Watering (Planting Bed) - Match selected plants to the irrigation method; install drop irrigation; review scheduling, maintenance and proper emitter placement.
- Efficient Garden Watering (Turf) - Practice how to replace older sprinklers with efficient rotary nozzles.
- Mulch Magic - Learn about the proper application of mulch, including the correct depth and distance from plants, and then apply mulch to the garden.
Blue Thumb Neighbors is funded by the Regional Water Authority and Carmichael Water District. It was developed with Department of Water Resources 2008 Urban Drought Assistance grant.
