Elderly Newport Man Killed in Irvine Crash

An 81-year-old Newport Beach man was killed in a car crash in Irvine today, police said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released as police still had not notified all of his family, was turning in to a parking not near Michelson and University drives about 7:30 a.m. when his car was struck by another vehicle westbound on University, according to Irvine police Lt. Tom Allan.

Police shut down all the westbound lanes of University between Michelson and Ridgeline Drive during the investigation and the closure was expected to last several more hours, Allan said.
