The El Moussa's personal life is off limits to the producers of the show, as HGTV declined to comment on the break-up. Instead, the channel discussed the plans for the "Flip or Flop" show with media outlets.

"We admire and appreciate Tarek and Christina's work on Flip or Flop. When it comes to matters related to their own family, we respect their privacy and honor any decision that works best for them and their children," HGTV public relations said. "HGTV is currently airing episodes of Flip or Flop and the series will continue production as scheduled."

As for their separation, the El Moussas disclosed their children are the most important thing in a statement released to media outlets.

"During the process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be," El Moussa's said in a statement released to People. "We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively and plan to continue our professional life together."

When asked how they managed to work together without fighting in an HGTV Insider video earlier this year, Christina El Moussa answered for the couple.

"We don't fight, we just bicker about decision making," she said.

Things changed for the El Moussas in 2016.

"Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage," their statement said. "We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed."

That statement was in reference to a May TMZ report where Orange County Sheriff's Department responded to the El Moussas' Yorba Linda residence after receiving a call of someone allegedly running from the home with a firearm.

US Weekly reported that an eyewitness spotted Tarek running toward a nearby hiking trail where he allegedly planned to "blow off some steam," and that the weapon was for "mountain lions and rattlesnakes" not for harming himself.

"Tarek allegedly left the home with a firearm, dropping the weapon when a circling helicopter commanded him to do so," MSN.com stated. In another report, US Weekly said that OCSD officers entered the El Moussa residence and removed several firearms from the home.

Fans of the show have followed devotedly. One even credited by Tarek El Moussa for saving his life when they noticed a lump on his neck that turned out to be thyroid cancer.

"If it wasn't for that nurse from Texas, I would have never known I had (thyroid) cancer at that point," Tarek said on an "Entertainment Tonight" interview earlier this year.

Tarek and Christina El Moussa married in 2009 and have two children: 1-year-old son Brayden, and 6-year-old daughter, Taylor.
